Man rescued at Calabar Stadium after attempting to commit suicide

Stadium floodlight pole

An unknown young man has on Thursday morning attempted to commit suicide at the U. J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State.

According to Elijah Besong, “the young man was in the stadium early, afterwards, he was seen climbing to the stadium floodlight pole, at first people who saw him thought he was a worker in the stadium, but soon realized his mission was to commit suicide when the stadium workers said he was not part of them.”

“People gathered some felt he was joking and asked him to go ahead and kill himself, while others begged him not to hurt himself, but to come down from the pole. Eventually, the anti-cultism squad arrived at the scene and convinced him to come down from the pole and he did and they took him away”

Reacting to the incident, some persons have viewed his action as a social media strategy of attracting attention and subsequent favour from the government and other agencies.

Meanwhile, a source who spoke to the victim, revealed that he had his identity card with him and claimed that his action was due to depression.
