OAU Mourns as Lion Attacks and Kills Zookeeper During Feeding

A tragic incident occurred at the Zoological Garden of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where a lion fatally attacked Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, the veterinary technologist in charge of the garden. The university's management, as conveyed in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, explained that the incident happened during the feeding of the animals in their den.


Despite efforts by other staff members to rescue him, Mr. Olawuyi suffered severe injuries from the lion's attack. The university community is in mourning over his untimely death.


The statement released by the university expressed deep sorrow and revealed that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, immediately halted a meeting to assess the situation. Despite attempts to save Mr. Olawuyi's life, the injuries were fatal.


The university has taken steps to support the deceased's family and has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
