Domestic Airfares Increased to N123,000 in August, Says NBS



The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that the average cost of domestic flight tickets in Nigeria rose to N123,700.14 in August 2024.


According to the NBS’s “Transport Fare Watch” report for August 2024, this represents an increase of 25.51 percent compared to the ticket prices in July.


The report stated, “For air travel, the average fare paid by passengers for a one-way ticket was N123,700.14 in August 2024, which is a 25.51% rise compared to the previous month (July 2024).”


On a yearly basis, the price of domestic flight tickets increased by 56.56%, moving up from N79,011.38 in August 2023.


States With the Highest and Lowest Fares

The report highlighted that Niger State recorded the highest average airfare for a one-way journey, with a fare of N129,575.21, followed closely by Abuja with N129,442.67.


On the other hand, Zamfara State had the lowest average airfare at N102,665.89, followed by Cross River State with N120,088.93.


The NBS also noted that among the geopolitical zones, the South-East region had the highest average fare at N125,640.19, followed by the North-Central with N125,420.29. The North-West recorded the lowest average fare, standing at N121,957.18.


City Bus Fare Decreased in August

The NBS also reported a drop in the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within cities. It fell by 7.77 percent from N942.61 in July to N869.35 in August 2024.


On a yearly basis, the city bus fare dropped by 34.95% compared to N1,336.38 in August 2023.


For intercity bus journeys, the average fare increased slightly by 0.59 percent, rising from N7,117.17 in July to N7,159.00 in August 2024. On a yearly basis, intercity fares rose by 20.97%, moving up from N5,918.18 in August 2023.


States With the Highest and Lowest Bus Fares

According to the report, Anambra State had the highest intercity bus fare at N9,580.85, followed by Gombe with N8,349.26. The least fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,574.46, followed by Ebonyi with N5,614.81.


For city bus journeys, Zamfara recorded the highest fare at N1,155.52, followed by Ondo at N1,065.20. Adamawa State had the lowest fare for city bus journeys at N455.33, followed by Abia State with N455.35.


Regional Analysis of Bus Fares

The NBS stated that the South-South region had the highest average bus fare within cities in August 2024, standing at N916.32, followed by the South-West at N905.33. The North-East region recorded the lowest fare at N832.34.


For intercity bus journeys, the South-South had the highest average fare at N7,671.01, followed by the South-East at N7,338.13. The North-Central region had the lowest fare for intercity bus trips at N6,856.65.


Motorcycle (Okada) Transportation Fare Increased

The report also indicated that the average fare for motorcycle transportation (popularly known as Okada) rose to N524.22 in August, marking an 8.46 percent increase compared to N483.33 in July.


However, on a year-on-year basis, the motorcycle fare decreased by 18.87%, compared to N646.12 in August 2023.


Lagos State recorded the highest motorcycle fare in August 2024 at N909.20, followed by Ondo at N761.39. Bayelsa had the lowest fare at N312.10, followed by Anambra with N317.05.


Regional Analysis of Motorcycle Fares

The South-West region recorded the highest average motorcycle fare at N593.76, followed by the North-East at N556.37. The South-East had the lowest motorcycle fare at N487.08.


Waterway Transportation Fare Increased

The NBS also reported an increase in the average fare paid for waterway transportation. In August 2024, the fare stood at N1,449.34, showing a 3.30 percent rise on a monthly basis.


On a yearly basis, the fare increased by 3.03%, compared to N1,406.74 in August 2023.


States With the Highest and Lowest Waterway Fares

Bayelsa State recorded the highest water transport fare in August 2024 at N4,563.98, followed by Delta at N4,261.55. Borno State recorded the lowest fare at N475.89, followed by Gombe at N619.19.


Regional Analysis of Waterway Fares

The report further showed that the South-South region had the highest water transport fare at N3,602.92, followed by the South-West at N1,414.91. The North-East recorded the lowest fare at N825.03.


Summary

Overall, the NBS report shows that transportation costs in Nigeria are on the rise, with airfares and water transport fares seeing significant increases. While city bus fares have decreased, intercity and motorcycle fares are still on the rise, reflecting the impact of various economic factors on transportation costs across the country.
