Governor’s Aide Coco-Bassey Esu Emphasises Quality Care at General Hospital, Calabar

The Special Assistant to the Governor of Cross River State on Nursing, Mr Esu Coco-Bassey Esu, has urged nurses and other healthcare personnel at the General Hospital, Calabar, to set a benchmark in quality service delivery for other hospitals across the state. His appeal underscores the significance of delivering top-notch patient care, mentoring students, maintaining professional ethics and discipline, and adhering strictly to standard nursing uniforms.

Mr Coco-Bassey further highlighted the necessity of an attitudinal shift among staff to align with established professional standards.

He reassured the hospital community that the Governor, His Excellency Senator Prince Dr Bassey Edet Otu, has proactively addressed key issues surrounding staff recruitment, capacity building, and remuneration. These interventions, he noted, aim to ensure optimal functionality within the state’s healthcare sector. Mr Coco-Bassey also emphasised that nurses are expected to uphold professional conduct, serve as role models for students, help curb patient extortion, and sustain a clean and welcoming environment for patients.


Commending the hospital’s management, Mr Coco-Bassey praised their efforts in improving both the clinical and environmental standards of the facility. He encouraged them to continue maintaining high standards, noting that the hospital serves as a reference point for others in the state.

In response, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Takim Kenneth, welcomed the visit by the Special Assistant and shared notable achievements alongside existing challenges. He expressed confidence that, with continued support from His Excellency, Senator Prince Otu, and key stakeholders, the General Hospital, Calabar, will emerge as a leader in healthcare service delivery.






Additionally, the Head of Nursing Services, Mrs Mbang Fabian, affirmed the department’s commitment to delivering comprehensive and evidence-based care, thereby alleviating the burdens on patients.

The visit featured interactive engagements with various attendees, including the Provost of the College of Nursing Sciences Calabar, Mrs Joy Obetem, the hospital administrator, Mr Eteng Eta, ward managers, unit heads, officials from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), and frontline nurses. It concluded with a guided tour of the hospital facility, led by Dr Takim.
