ZANGON MAJE, JIGAWA STATE — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the deaths of nine people following a boat mishap at Zangon Maje Village in Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 27 July 2025, at about 7 p.m., during a journey between Digawa Village in Jahun Local Government Area and Zangon Maje. According to NEMA’s Kano Operations Office, the vessel was carrying 17 passengers—mostly young girls—when it capsized midway.
NEMA announced the development via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. The agency disclosed that eight passengers were rescued alive by local divers, while nine others were confirmed dead.
The rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local authorities. Officials also held a sensitisation campaign to educate residents on safety measures when travelling by water.
