U.S. Declines Participation in UN's Two-State Solution Conference, Calling it “Unhelpful”

28 July 2025 - The United States has rejected participation in a United Nations-led conference on the two-state solution, describing the gathering as poorly timed and counterproductive.

In a statement released on Monday, the U.S. government criticised the conference, set to take place in New York City this week, calling it a “publicity stunt” that could disrupt sensitive diplomatic efforts already underway to end the ongoing conflict.

The statement warned that rather than promoting peace, the conference could prolong the war, embolden Hamas, and undermine progress being made behind the scenes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the move as “a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th” and “a reward for terrorism.”

“The United States will not take part in this insult,” the statement read. “We will continue to lead genuine efforts to end the fighting and deliver lasting peace.”

American officials stressed that their focus remains on serious, practical diplomacy and not what they termed “stage-managed conferences” that only create the illusion of action.

The statement also criticised French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent announcement of support for recognising a Palestinian state. U.S. officials said the gesture was welcomed by Hamas and viewed it as a distraction that undermines broader diplomatic goals—namely, ending the suffering in Gaza, freeing hostages, and fostering long-term peace and prosperity across the Middle East.
