September 20, 2025 - Cross River State today celebrates the birthday of one of its most dynamic healthcare advocates, Coco-Bassey Esu, whose contributions to nursing and public service continue to shape the state’s health sector. Currently serving as Special Assistant to the Governor on Nursing, Esu’s career reflects a rare blend of clinical expertise, policy engagement, and grassroots mobilization.
Born into the family of the late Etinyin Henry N. Coco-Bassey of the Eyamba clan in Calabar South LGA, Esu’s academic journey spans foundational and professional milestones—from FSLC and SSCE to qualifications as a Registered Nurse and Registered Orthopedic Nurse. He is presently pursuing a medical degree (MBBS), underscoring his commitment to lifelong learning.
Esu’s leadership footprint is extensive. He has held key roles in student and professional nursing associations, including Secretary of the National Students Nurses and Midwives Association (CRS), Student Union President of the School of Nursing Itigidi, and multiple executive positions within the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives across Ebonyi and Cross River States. His influence also extends to academia, where he has served as a Clinical Instructor at Ebonyi State University.
Beyond nursing, Esu has played strategic roles in political and development circles. He has served as Media Aide to Senator Gershom Bassey and Commissioner Dr. Inyang Asibong, and was a member of the Cross River State COVID-19 Steering Committee. His portfolio includes leadership in youth organizations such as the Leo Club and advisory roles within the Lions Club. He has also contributed to state-level health planning initiatives and campaign organizations.
Among his recognitions are the Leo Award of Honor (LAH), Member Order of Malabor (MOM), University of Calabar Campus Personality Award, and the Niger Delta Icon and Dynamic Award. He was also honored by the National Association of Nigeria Student Nurses and Midwives for his outstanding support of nursing students.
As Special Assistant on Nursing, Esu has championed reforms aimed at strengthening the profession. His strategic priorities include:
Enhancing nursing education and training
Advocating for inclusive healthcare policies
Promoting infrastructure development
Supporting workforce planning and welfare
Ensuring quality assurance in nursing practice
Facilitating collaboration among healthcare stakeholders
In under a year, Esu has visited over 30 health facilities, facilitated the release of buses to nursing colleges, advocated for the employment and promotion of nurses, and pushed for budget access and infrastructure upgrades in health institutions.
His efforts align with Governor Sen. Dr. Prince Bassey Otu’s “People First” agenda, reinforcing the role of nurses as frontline agents of care and community health.
As Coco-Bassey Esu marks another year, his legacy stands as a testament to visionary leadership, service, and the transformative power of nursing. His journey continues to inspire a new generation of healthcare professionals across Cross River State and beyond.
