Calabar, Cross River State – 25 September 2025
In preparation for the forthcoming accreditation and resource inspection by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Special Assistant to the Governor of Cross River State on Nursing, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu, paid a working visit to the College of Nursing Sciences, Calabar. The visit focused on evaluating ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at strengthening nursing education and training within the institution.
During the inspection, Mr. Esu expressed deep appreciation to Governor Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu for his continued support of nursing development in the state. He noted that the college’s access to budget implementation has enabled a smooth transition from the traditional school system to a collegiate structure, which demands significant infrastructural upgrades.
Mr. Esu particularly praised the college’s entrepreneurial development centre, describing it as a vital component of NBTE requirements for student training. The centre offers practical skill acquisition in areas such as fashion design, hairdressing, catering, and art design. He commended the management for integrating vocational training with academic instruction, positioning students for broader career opportunities.
In a meeting with the college’s management team, Mr. Esu discussed strategies to enhance academic performance and ensure alignment with national training standards. He also congratulated the institution for its recent success in emerging as the state’s representative at the upcoming National Debate Competition, scheduled to be held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Responding on behalf of the Governing Council, Council Member Mrs. Ekanem Ekpo conveyed the appreciation of Chairman Dr. Christy Essien Ekpe to the state government. She acknowledged the administration’s support through key appointments, budget access, and the provision of a 32-seater coaster bus for student clinical activities, describing these as clear indicators of the Governor’s commitment to public health.
Provost of the College, Mrs. Joy Nelson, also thanked the Governor for his steadfast backing, which has enabled the institution to attain provisional National Diploma status from the NBTE. She affirmed that the upcoming accreditation phase would further improve the college’s infrastructure and enhance student training.
The visit concluded with a tour of the entrepreneurship centre and other facilities, led by Registrar Mrs. Bassey Okokon Etim and members of the management team.
The inspection reaffirms the Cross River State Government’s dedication to building a robust and competent nursing workforce capable of delivering quality healthcare services across the state.
