CALABAR, Cross River State – September 26, 2025 – The Cross River State Police Command has broken its silence on the widely circulated videos depicting an altercation between a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) assigned to the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and staff members of the Iron and Steel Group, a Chinese-owned company operating in the zone.
The Command confirmed that the State Commissioner of Police has personally intervened to address the situation, with administrative actions now underway.
The incident, which sparked significant online discussion after videos went viral, prompted an official statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene. The statement aimed to clarify the events and dispel misinformation surrounding the incident.
Police Assure Public of Administrative Resolution
In the release, the Command acknowledged the viral nature of the incident and assured the public that the matter is being handled at the highest level. "The State Commissioner of Police has intervened in the matter and administrative actions are being taken," the statement read.
This indicates that the conduct of the DPO involved is under formal review by the police administration, a standard procedure for addressing internal matters.
Command Denies Confrontation with Military Personnel
Furthermore, the Police Command moved to quell rumors of a standoff between security agencies at the scene. The statement explicitly denied any friction between police officers and soldiers who were also present.
"The Command also wishes to state that there was no confrontation between the police and the soldiers who were at the scene during the incident, contrary to the narration," SP Irene stated, emphasizing that inter-agency cooperation remained intact.
The press release concludes by reaffirming the Command's commitment to maintaining order and professionalism, particularly within key economic zones like the Export Processing Zone in Calabar. The public awaits further updates as the administrative process unfolds.
