Abuja, Nigeria – 25 September 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the cancellation of the traditional Independence Day parade scheduled for October 1, 2025. The decision was confirmed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, during a press briefing in Abuja.
Senator Akume stated that the cancellation was made in line with the current economic realities facing the country. He noted that while the parade will not hold, the government will mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary with a low-key celebration.
According to the Secretary, the official programme will include a public lecture scheduled for 29 September at the State House Conference Centre, as well as a presidential address to the nation on 1 October. He emphasised that the scaled-down events are part of efforts to manage resources responsibly while still honouring the significance of the day.
The announcement comes amid growing calls for fiscal prudence and national reflection. Senator Akume assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to unity, progress, and the values that Independence Day represents.
