INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Steps Down, Urges Successor to Confront Electoral Challenges

Abuja, Nigeria

In a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s electoral landscape, Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially stepped down as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking the end of his tenure and ushering in a new phase for the country’s democratic process.

Yakubu, who has served as INEC Chairman since 2015, made the announcement on Monday, 7 October 2025, citing the completion of his statutory term. His resignation comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with electoral reforms, voter confidence, and the integrity of democratic institutions.

In his farewell statement, Yakubu reflected on the challenges and achievements of his tenure, acknowledging the complexities of managing elections in a diverse and dynamic nation. He urged his successor to confront these challenges head-on, focusing on transparency, inclusivity, and technological innovation.

“The task ahead is enormous,” Yakubu stated. “But with commitment to the principles of fairness and the rule of law, the Commission can continue to improve the credibility of our elections.”

Under Yakubu’s leadership, INEC oversaw two general elections—in 2019 and 2023—as well as numerous off-cycle polls. His tenure was marked by the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), both aimed at enhancing transparency and reducing electoral fraud.

However, his administration also faced criticism over logistical lapses, delayed results, and allegations of irregularities in some elections. These issues have fuelled ongoing debates about the need for deeper reform and stronger institutional safeguards.

Political analysts view Yakubu’s departure as an opportunity for renewal within INEC. The incoming chairman will inherit a complex portfolio that includes strengthening voter education, improving logistics, and restoring public trust in the electoral process.

As Nigeria prepares for future elections, stakeholders across civil society, political parties, and international partners will be watching closely to see how the transition unfolds and whether the Commission can build on the foundations laid during Yakubu’s tenure.

The Presidency is expected to announce a new INEC Chairman in the coming days, with expectations high for a leader who can navigate the evolving demands of Nigeria’s democracy.
