CALABAR –In a significant move to support nursing education, the World Health Organization (WHO) has donated three new 18-seater buses and essential medical equipment to the three Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Cross River State.
The handover took place on Tuesday at the opening of the 66th National Council on Health (NCH) in Calabar, which is focused on the theme, “My Health, My Right: Accelerating Universal Health Coverage.”
The buses and equipment are destined for the nursing colleges in Calabar, Ogoja, and Obudu, and were received by the State Government on their behalf.
Representing Governor Apostle Sen Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Deputy Governor, His Excellency Rt Hon Dr Peter Odey, officially opened the council meeting. He stressed the importance of stronger partnerships between the state, the Federal Ministry of Health, and development partners to build a more resilient healthcare system for Nigeria.
The WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr Pavel Ursu, personally handed over the items to the State Commissioner for Health, Eld (Dr) Henry Egbe Ayuk. Dr Ursu reaffirmed WHO's ongoing commitment to improving healthcare services both in Cross River State and across Nigeria.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammed Ali Pate, commended the WHO for its consistent support. He urged the benefiting nursing colleges to put the new resources to good use, highlighting the critical role of well-trained nursing professionals in the nation's health sector.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Federal Permanent Secretary for Health, Daju Kachollom, health commissioners from all 36 states, and other top government officials and healthcare stakeholders.
