Calabar, 11 December 2025 - Cross River State police on Thursday raided a suspected criminal’s hideout in Okurikan village, Odukpani Local Government Area, arresting a man described by officers as a self-styled native doctor. The 47-year-old suspect, named Nsa Ayi, was taken into custody after the operation. Police said he was alleged to be supplying charms and narcotics to local gangs.
Items recovered
Police said the raid yielded the following items:
-
Two homemade single-barreled shotguns
-
Two live cartridges
-
One bag of cannabis (known locally as a Ghana-must-go bag)
-
Various items believed to be ritual charms
Commissioner of Police Rashid Bello Afegbua praised residents for providing the tip-off that led to the arrest. He said policing “cannot succeed without the support of the community” and added that such a partnership was “key to a stable, low-crime environment” in the state.
Related incidents
The raid follows a similar operation on 10 December, when police on the Ikom-Calabar highway stopped a 45-year-old man carrying a pump-action shotgun, ammunition and a machete. In that case, officers also confiscated one spent and one live cartridge. Commissioner Afegbua said the command is determined to maintain peace ahead of the carnival period, and thanked people for passing information to the police. He reiterated that policing could not succeed without community backing.
