20-Year-Old Man Held in Bauchi on Child Assault Charges

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl, the force has confirmed.

According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Habib, the suspect identified as Bilal Ya’u was taken into custody after the girl’s father reported the alleged incident to officers at the Alkaleri divisional police headquarters on Friday.

The father told police that on 5 January 2026, his daughter was lured by Ya’u, who lived nearby, into an unfinished building, where he allegedly forced himself on her.

Police detectives, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Alkaleri, Kadiri Danjuma, immediately responded to the distress call and escorted the victim to General Hospital, Alkaleri, for urgent medical examination and care.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the offence and admitted to previously assaulting the child during the rainy season of 2024 an earlier incident for which he was merely warned by the girl’s mother to keep away from her daughter.

Bauchi police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that charges will be brought against Ya’u in court once formal inquiries are completed.
