NAF, US Officials Hold Strategic Talks to Speed Up Attack Helicopter Delivery

Senior officials from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and representatives of the United States Government have met in California to push forward the delivery of 12 advanced attack helicopters, in a bid to bolster Nigeria’s defence capabilities.

The Programme Management Review – held from 5 to 6 January 2026 in San Diego – was led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and included delegates from defence manufacturer Bell Textron.

According to a statement issued by the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, the meeting focused on assessing progress, enforcing accountability, and ensuring that agreed timelines and financial provisions are strictly observed.

Air Marshal Aneke said the engagement was aimed at strengthening programme oversight and advancing the delivery schedule of the AH-1Z attack helicopters, which are regarded as critical to enhancing the Air Force’s operational readiness.

He praised the cooperation and professionalism of the United States Government and Bell Textron throughout the acquisition process, adding that the structured review reflects the NAF’s unwavering commitment to results driven delivery.

Describing the helicopter procurement as more than a simple upgrade of hardware, the air chief portrayed the project as a symbol of robust defence collaboration between Nigeria and the United States. The partnership, he said, underscores a shared resolve to tackle evolving security threats both regionally and beyond.

Air Marshal Aneke also reaffirmed his force’s determination to expedite delivery, urging all involved teams to innovate and remain focused on meeting the required schedules and standards without compromise.

He expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for his steadfast support of the NAF’s modernisation efforts. The AH-1Z helicopters, once delivered, are expected to significantly improve the Air Force’s capacity to deliver precise air support, reduce collateral damage and strengthen protection for troops and civilians alike.
