Nigerian Military Confirms Coup Plot, 16 Officers to Face Court-Martial

Abuja, Nigeria - The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has formally acknowledged that an internal investigation uncovered evidence of an alleged coup attempt by several personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, announcing that 16 officers will now be arraigned before military judicial panels.

In a statement released on Monday, Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that the comprehensive probe initiated in October 2025 after the arrest of the officers
has concluded in line with established military procedures.

The officers, whose ranks ranged from Captain to Brigadier General, were initially detained for alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. While initial military statements described the matter as an internal disciplinary issue, subsequent findings reportedly showed that some of the personnel had cases to answer over planning to overthrow the government.

“The Defence Headquarters wishes to inform the public that the investigation has been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority,” Major General Uba said, noting that the identified allegations were inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces.

Those officers judged to have sufficient evidence against them will be brought before relevant military judicial panels to face trial under the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. The DHQ emphasised that the legal process will uphold due process and fairness, underscoring its commitment to accountability and institutional integrity.

The statement reiterated that the actions being taken are disciplinary in nature and form part of internal mechanisms to preserve discipline, cohesion and operational effectiveness within the military. It further stressed the Armed Forces’ pledge to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.

The confirmation of the alleged coup plot marks a notable shift in the official narrative, following months of public speculation and earlier denials from military authorities. It underscores ongoing efforts to address misconduct within the ranks while preserving democratic stability in Nigeria.
