Police secure nearly a thousand rounds of ammunition in Maiduguri

Recovered Ammunition

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Police in Borno State have uncovered a substantial cache of ammunition in the Maiduguri metropolis, marking a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to disrupt the flow of illegal arms in the region.

Officers from the Borno State Police Command, acting on credible intelligence, discovered the hidden stockpile on Sunday in the Kumshe Jamba Mari area of the state capital. A total of 912 rounds of B32 API-type 7.62 x 51mm ammunition were retrieved and safely secured by the command, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed in a statement.

The find occurred on 4 January 2026 at about 1400 hours, when the Divisional Police Officer of Lamisula Division led a team to investigate reports of suspicious activity in the neighbourhood. Upon locating the concealed rounds, the Department of Explosive Ordnance Disposal was swiftly deployed to oversee their safe removal.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid praised members of the public for their timely information, which he said was instrumental in the operation’s success. He urged residents to continue working closely with law enforcement by reporting unusual activities within their communities.

Investigations are ongoing as police strive to determine the origin of the ammunition and identify those responsible for its concealment. Authorities have pledged to bring those involved to justice.

This discovery follows a separate recovery by military forces in Borno, where troops uncovered over 1,200 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition concealed in a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri in early January.
