Young Leaders call for Civic Engagement, Voter Registration, Reaffirm support for Gov Otu

By Oluchi Omai

Leaders of the Young Political Parties Members who championed the Back to South movement converged on Calabar today for their New Year engagement meeting. The gathering, which brought together coalition leaders, grassroots members, and young political stakeholders across party lines, reaffirmed their support for Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, while reflecting on the gains recorded since the group's last assembly in 2025.

In his address, Mr. Coco Bassey Esu, Special Assistant to the Governor on Nursing and Leader of the Group, described the meeting as a moment of gratitude and renewed commitment. He credited Governor Otu for his sustained goodwill towards members of the coalition, noting that several attendees had secured employment through the governor's intervention.

"Today's meeting is made possible by the continued benevolence of His Excellency," Esu said. "Many of you here have benefitted directly, and for those still waiting, we must continue to pray and remain hopeful that more opportunities will come."

Beyond employment, Esu highlighted education as a key area of support, revealing that his office would assist indigenous applicants seeking admission into Colleges of Nursing and other related programs provided they meet the established entry requirements. This initiative, he said, aligns with the administration's broader goal of expanding access to education for local communities.

The coalition's full backing for Governor Otu was reiterated by one of the Leaders of the Group, Mr. Maurice Eyo, who stressed the importance of civic engagement in sustaining political support. Other speakers included Hon. Christie Eso, Vice Chairman of Bakassi Local Government Area, who urged members to actively participate in voter registration, emphasizing that possessing a voter's card is essential to the coalition's long-term objectives.

Hon. Ani Ekpenyong echoed this message, cautioning against overreliance on online activism and reminding members that political influence ultimately lies at the ballot box. "Social media cannot vote for anyone," he said, calling on members to be ready to vote for candidates of their choice when the time comes.

Several members expressed their appreciation to the state government and the coalition's leadership for the support they received over the past year. Speakers repeatedly emphasized unity and collective responsibility, urging members to remain committed regardless of party affiliation.

The meeting was graced by goodwill messages from notable figures, including former Calabar South legislator, Hon. Asuquo Ekpenyong; former Councilor, Hon. Princess; Pioneer Speaker of the Young People's Parliament, Comrade Gideon Mbukpa; and former Councilor, Hon. Ani Offiong. among other dignitaries lauded the government's achievements in its two years in office.
