Armed bandits have attacked a rural community in Zamfara State, killing at least 30 people and abducting several others in a violent incident that has deepened concerns about security in the northwest of the country.
The assault occurred on Thursday in Dutsin Dan Ajiya village, located in the Anka Local Government Area of the state. Witnesses reported that the gunmen arrived on motorcycles, blocked all exit routes and opened fire, trapping residents as the violence unfolded.
Local sources described widespread chaos as attackers shot sporadically and targeted houses for several hours, leaving both men and women among the confirmed casualties. Bodies were recovered from the scene by the morning following the raid.
Several villagers are still unaccounted for, with fear growing that they have either been taken captive or are missing in the aftermath of the attack. Residents also said many homes were damaged and some inhabitants wounded during the onslaught.
The area is known to be affected by persistent insecurity linked to armed “bandit” groups, who frequently target villages for mass killings and abductions. Despite ongoing efforts by authorities, communities in Zamfara and neighbouring states remain vulnerable to such large-scale raids.
At the time of reporting, neither the Zamfara State Police Command nor the Nigerian military had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
