The Federal Government has fulfilled its earlier pledge of rewards to Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed on Monday that members of the team had received official documents for their national honours and housing allocations. The presentation took place in Lyon, France, where the team is currently competing in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
Details of the Reward Package
After the team’s victory in August 2025, the government announced a special reward package that included:
National honour: Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for each player
Cash reward: $100,000 for every player
Housing allocation: A flat in Abuja for each team member
Members of the technical crew were also promised $50,000 each as part of the incentive package.
Recognition of Historic Achievement
The rewards were approved after the team’s remarkable performance at the continental tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire, where Nigeria defeated Mali 78–64 in the final to secure a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and their seventh overall championship.
D’Tigress have dominated African women’s basketball for years, extending a long unbeaten run across continental competitions.
Current Campaign
Meanwhile, the African champions are currently participating in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon, where they have recorded mixed results against teams including Colombia, the Philippines, South Korea and France.
