Galatasaray Stun Liverpool in Champions League Round of 16

Galatasaray produced a disciplined display in Istanbul to defeat Liverpool 1–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 encounter, leaving the Premier League side with work to do ahead of the return fixture at Anfield.

The Turkish champions seized the initiative early at the RAMS Park stadium when Mario Lemina headed home in the seventh minute. The goal came from a corner that was flicked across the penalty area by Victor Osimhen, allowing Lemina to dive forward and steer the ball past Liverpool’s defence.

Liverpool attempted to respond quickly and enjoyed spells of possession, but the visitors struggled to convert their pressure into clear chances. Their attacking efforts lacked sharpness, while Galatasaray remained organised at the back and dangerous on the counter-attack.

The home side even thought they had doubled their advantage shortly after the hour mark when Osimhen finished into an empty net, but the effort was ruled out after a VAR review found an offside in the build-up.

Despite the narrow margin, Galatasaray looked the more threatening side for long periods, capitalising on defensive lapses from Liverpool and the intimidating atmosphere created by their supporters. The English club, meanwhile, endured a frustrating evening as their attempts to find an equaliser repeatedly broke down in the final third.

The result gives Galatasaray a slender but significant advantage ahead of the second leg, which will be played at Anfield on March 18. Liverpool must overturn the deficit at home if they are to keep their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals alive.

For the Turkish side, the victory marks another impressive European performance this season and strengthens their belief that they can challenge some of Europe’s most established clubs on the continental stage.
