The political trajectory of Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh in 2026 has so far reflected a mix of legislative activism, political repositioning, and continued grassroots engagement.

Representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives Nigeria, the lawmaker popularly known as Onyeocha N’Aba has remained visible in national debates while maintaining strong connections with constituents back home.

Budget Scrutiny and Fiscal Oversight

One of the notable moments of the year occurred during a budget defence session before the House Appropriation Committee.

During the proceedings, Ikwechegh initiated questioning directed at the Federal Minister of Finance regarding the status of capital budget implementation for 2024 and 2025. His inquiry focused on the performance and disbursement of funds allocated for capital projects.

According to the figures discussed at the hearing, about ₦1.15 trillion had reportedly been raised and approved to cover roughly 30 percent of the 2025 capital budget. However, lawmakers were informed that none of the funds had yet been released for capital projects.

The development drew concern among committee members, especially given ongoing borrowings by the federal government and strong revenue generation reported by agencies such as the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Nigeria Customs Service.

In response to the queries, the Finance Minister explained that the responsibility for disbursement rested with the Minister of State for Finance, a clarification that led to further exchanges during the session. The hearing was eventually adjourned to allow for additional explanations and further legislative review.

Observers say the development highlighted the role of parliamentary oversight in ensuring transparency in public spending.

A Voice in Electoral Reform Debate

Ikwechegh also featured prominently during a heated plenary debate on proposed adjustments to the Electoral Act.

The session saw lawmakers divided over whether Nigeria should fully adopt electronic transmission of election results or retain aspects of the manual process. The disagreement triggered a tense atmosphere inside the chamber, with members raising procedural objections over how the debate was being handled.

During the deliberations, Ikwechegh joined other lawmakers in calling for transparency and adherence to legislative procedures. He also urged citizens to remain actively engaged in democratic processes, stressing the importance of vigilance in protecting electoral reforms.

The disagreement eventually escalated into a breakdown of order that resulted in a walkout by some members of the House.

Role in Security and Defence Discussions

Ikwechegh has also been involved in committee deliberations related to national security funding.

He participated in a strategic meeting of the House Committee on Navy chaired by Yusuf Gagdi. The session focused on financial planning for the Nigerian Navy.

During the meeting, lawmakers examined the status of the 2025 budget and agreed that allocations that had not yet received approval would be transferred into the 2026 fiscal cycle to prevent disruptions to ongoing naval programmes.

Members emphasized that stable funding remains essential to maintaining maritime security and strengthening operational readiness.

Political Realignment

In another significant development this year, Ikwechegh announced a change in his political affiliation.

The lawmaker formally joined the Labour Party Nigeria, marking a notable shift in his political trajectory. After declaring his new party membership, he visited the Governor of Abia State, Alex Chioma Otti, to formally inform him of the decision and present the membership card issued by his ward.

He was also received by fellow National Assembly member Ginger Onwusibe, who welcomed him into the party.

The move is widely interpreted as part of a broader realignment within Abia’s evolving political landscape.

Community Engagement and Humanitarian Outreach

Beyond legislative activities, Ikwechegh’s humanitarian initiatives continue to shape his public image.

Through the Alex Mascot Foundation, various empowerment and relief programmes have reached communities across Abia State. The foundation has distributed food items, clothing, fuel, and other relief materials to residents and humanitarian organizations.

Several beneficiaries have also highlighted the impact of the foundation’s educational and economic support programmes.

A young entrepreneur trained under its SME empowerment initiative said the programme helped him establish a tiling business and gain financial independence. Likewise, a scholarship recipient described the educational assistance as a turning point that enabled her to pursue university studies.

Looking Ahead

As the year progresses, expectations remain high among constituents in Aba North and South.

With continued legislative responsibilities, ongoing political developments, and new community projects anticipated, Ikwechegh’s activities in the coming months will likely further define his role both within the National Assembly and in the political landscape of Abia State.
