Rapper-Turned-Politician Balendra Shah Sworn in as Nepal’s Prime Minister

Nepal has entered a new political era as rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah was officially sworn in as the country’s prime minister, marking a historic shift driven largely by youth-led political change.

Shah, popularly known as Balen, took the oath of office on Friday following a landslide electoral victory by his Rastriya Swatantra Party in the March 5 parliamentary elections. His party secured a commanding majority in the House of Representatives, paving the way for his emergence as leader of government.

At 35, Shah becomes one of the youngest leaders in Nepal’s history, signalling what observers describe as a generational transition in the country’s politics. His rise comes in the aftermath of widespread anti-government protests led largely by young people, which had demanded accountability, reforms, and an end to entrenched corruption.

President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath during a formal ceremony in Kathmandu, bringing to an end a transitional period that followed the exit of the previous administration.

Before his ascent to national leadership, Shah built a strong following as a rapper known for socially conscious lyrics addressing corruption and inequality. He later transitioned into politics, serving as mayor of Kathmandu before contesting the general election that propelled him to power.

His victory is widely seen as a rejection of traditional political elites and a response to public frustration over economic hardship and governance challenges. Analysts say expectations are high for his administration to deliver on promises of transparency, job creation, and institutional reforms.

Despite the optimism surrounding his emergence, Shah faces significant challenges, including tackling corruption, stabilising the economy, and addressing unemployment, which has driven many Nepalese citizens to seek opportunities abroad.

His swearing-in marks a defining moment in Nepal’s political landscape, with many citizens hopeful that the new leadership will usher in a period of meaningful reform and renewed national direction.
