CAF President Motsepe Visits Dakar Amid AFCON Trophy Controversy

Patrice Motsepe

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has travelled to Dakar, Senegal, as the continental body seeks to ease tensions following the controversial reversal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final result.

Motsepe’s visit comes weeks after CAF’s Appeal Board overturned Senegal’s on-field victory over Morocco, ruling that the West African side had forfeited the match after briefly walking off the pitch in protest during the final. The decision awarded Morocco a 3–0 win and sparked widespread backlash across Senegal and the wider football community.

During the working visit, Motsepe is expected to meet Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as well as officials of the Senegalese Football Federation. The engagement is aimed at addressing concerns arising from the ruling and reinforcing cooperation between CAF and its member associations.

CAF has indicated that the trip is part of broader efforts to restore confidence in its governance and decision-making processes after the controversy surrounding the AFCON final. The incident has triggered criticism of the organisation’s regulatory framework and raised questions about transparency and fairness in African football administration.

The disputed final, played in Morocco, had initially seen Senegal emerge winners after extra time. However, the subsequent appeal and reversal of the result have led to diplomatic and sporting tensions, with Senegal challenging the decision and seeking redress through legal channels.

Motsepe’s presence in Dakar underscores the seriousness of the situation, as CAF moves to engage key stakeholders and stabilise relations following one of the most contentious episodes in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
