Governor Otu's Aide Dr Coco-Bassey Meets NMCN And NANNM Leaders to Advance Nursing Development

In a significant move to bolster healthcare delivery and nursing standards, the Special Assistant to the Governor of Cross River State on Nursing, Dr Coco-Bassey Esu, has conducted high-level working visits to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Abuja.

The visits form part of a strategic drive by Governor Bassey Otu’s administration to enhance nursing services and education for the benefit of the citizenry.

During the meeting with the CEO and Registrar of the NMCN, Alh. Dr Ndagi Alhassan, Dr Esu extended their congratulations to the Registrar on his recent appointment, acknowledging his expertise and dedication to the profession.

Dr Esu reaffirmed the Cross River State Government’s commitment to the growth of nursing, revealing that a plot of land has been allocated for the construction of an NMCN zonal office within the state. He further pledged the administration's collaboration with the Council to ensure strong state representation.

In response, Alh. Dr Ndagi expressed his readiness to partner with the state to improve nursing education and practice. He commended Governor Otu for his inclusive governance, noting the appointment of nursing professionals to various government roles.

"I urge the appointees to utilise their positions effectively to promote best practices in the profession," Dr Ndagi stated, while applauding the governor’s foresight.

In a separate engagement, Dr Esu met with the National President of NANNM, Comrade Haruna Mamman. The Governor’s aide commended the union for its leadership structure, particularly the inclusion of Cross River State representatives such as Dr Ojong Ogar, the National Financial Secretary.

Dr Esu highlighted the necessity of maintaining cordial relations between the state and national executive councils to ensure effective administration. He also praised the association for securing the hosting rights for the upcoming Commonwealth Conference for Nurses and Midwives.

Comrade Mamman lauded the Cross River State Government’s decision to create a dedicated office for nursing affairs and for its recent recruitment of nursing professionals. He described these actions as "worthy of recognition by the highest body of NANNM."

The NANNM President also disclosed that legislative efforts are currently underway at the National Assembly to review the Nursing and Midwifery Act, a move intended to strengthen the profession on a national scale.

Dr Esu concluded the visit by reiterating that every action taken by the Governor’s office is geared towards promoting excellence in nursing education and practice across the state.
