The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man accused of spreading false information after allegedly claiming that a military helicopter dropped suspicious objects in a bush between Nimo and Adazi Nnukwu communities in Anaocha Local Government Area.
Police identified the suspect as the individual behind a viral voice note that triggered fear among residents and sparked widespread concern on social media. According to the command, investigations revealed that the claim was fabricated.
The command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect admitted during questioning that he created and circulated the false report without verifying the information.
Police explained that officers were immediately deployed to the area after the message surfaced online. Their assessment found no suspicious objects and no indication of any security threat. The location remained peaceful, with residents carrying on with their normal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the deliberate spread of false security alerts, warning that such actions can create unnecessary panic and undermine public confidence in the work of security agencies.
He urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports capable of causing fear or disrupting public order.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to intelligence driven policing and collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the safety of residents across the state. Authorities also encouraged citizens to promptly report suspicious activities through recognised security channels rather than circulating unverified claims on social media.
