President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security agencies to strengthen protection around the premises of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, as part of efforts to safeguard one of Nigeria’s foremost policy and leadership institutions.
The directive comes against the backdrop of ongoing security challenges in parts of the country and the Federal Government’s broader strategy to reinforce critical national institutions against potential threats. The President has repeatedly emphasised the need for proactive security measures to protect lives, strategic assets, and institutions vital to national development.
According to reports, the order followed concerns raised over the security environment surrounding the institute, which regularly hosts senior government officials, military officers, policymakers, academics, and international participants attending strategic leadership programmes.
NIPSS is widely regarded as Nigeria’s premier think tank, providing research, policy recommendations, and leadership training for top public and private sector executives. Given its strategic importance, authorities are seeking to ensure that participants and staff operate in a secure environment conducive to learning and policy development.
The President's directive reportedly includes the deployment of additional security personnel, enhanced surveillance measures, improved intelligence gathering, and closer collaboration among security agencies operating in and around the institution.
The move aligns with Tinubu's broader commitment to strengthening national security infrastructure and improving the operational capacity of security agencies. In recent months, the administration has intensified efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats across the country.
Security experts have long argued that critical institutions such as NIPSS require special protection due to their role in shaping national policy and hosting influential decision-makers. The institute's strategic significance makes it an important asset within Nigeria's governance and security architecture.
Government officials have also reiterated that safeguarding educational and policy institutions remains a priority, particularly at a time when insecurity continues to pose challenges in several regions of the country. Recent incidents of attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes have prompted calls for stronger security arrangements around public facilities and strategic national assets.
The reinforcement at NIPSS is expected to reassure participants, staff, and stakeholders while supporting the institute's mandate of producing research and policy solutions aimed at addressing Nigeria's developmental and security challenges.
As authorities continue to review security arrangements nationwide, the latest directive underscores the government's determination to protect key institutions and ensure that national strategic activities are conducted without disruption.
