Truecaller Lite Expands Caller ID and Scam Protection to Millions of Android Users Across Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria – 10 June 2026 – Truecaller has announced the expansion of Truecaller Lite, a new mobile application developed specifically for entry-level Android smartphones, following its initial launch in Nigeria. The move is set to bring caller identification and scam protection services to millions more users across Nigeria and other emerging markets where affordable Android devices remain the primary gateway to digital connectivity.

Nigeria was among the first countries globally to receive Truecaller Lite, and the company says feedback from Nigerian users played a significant role in validating the product before its wider rollout across Africa, Latin America and Asia.

The lightweight application has been designed to address the practical challenges faced by users of entry-level smartphones, including limited storage capacity, lower memory availability and reduced processing power. According to Truecaller, these constraints can often make it difficult for users to run feature-rich applications without compromising device performance.

At just 10 MB in size, Truecaller Lite has been built as a separate native Android application rather than a scaled-down version of the company's flagship app. It delivers key features including caller identification, spam and fraud blocking, default dialler functionality, number search capabilities and contact management, while maintaining fast and reliable performance on resource-constrained devices.

Importantly, users of Truecaller Lite receive access to the same protection infrastructure as users of the main Truecaller application. The app leverages the company's global database, which identified more than 68 billion spam and fraud calls worldwide in 2025.

Tackling Rising Spam and Fraud in Nigeria

The expansion comes at a time when fraud and unwanted communications continue to rise across Nigeria. According to data shared by Truecaller, Nigeria recorded the highest levels of spam calls in Africa during 2025. The company reported that 51 per cent of all unknown calls received by Nigerian users were identified as spam or fraudulent, meaning more than one in every two unknown calls was potentially unwanted or malicious.

The company noted that many of the countries most affected by growing spam and fraud trends are also markets where entry-level Android devices account for a significant share of smartphone ownership. As a result, ensuring access to effective fraud protection on lower-specification devices has become increasingly important.

In Nigeria, Truecaller Lite is available through both the Google Play Store and partner Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) channels, allowing the application to reach users directly through devices they already own. The company said this approach helps bring fraud protection to users without requiring additional storage space that many entry-level device owners may not have available.

Safe Communication Should Be Accessible to Everyone

Commenting on the expansion, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, Chief Executive Officer of Truecaller, said the company believes access to safe communication should not depend on the type of smartphone a person uses.

"Safe communication should not depend on the phone you have. The next billion users live in markets where entry-level devices are often the norm. Truecaller Lite is a new product built specifically for them, and it was important for us to provide the same protection from spam and fraud that users expect from Truecaller around the world."

Expansion Across Emerging Markets

Following its initial availability in Nigeria and Colombia earlier this year, Truecaller Lite is now expanding to an additional eleven markets, including Kenya, Ghana, Algeria, Chile, Egypt, Iraq, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The company also confirmed that further launches across emerging markets are planned.

In Nigeria, compatible Android users can download the application through the Google Play Store as well as the Transsion app store.
