The Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Apostle Sen. Dr. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has approved a new retirement policy extending the service period for health workers across the state to 65 years of age or 40 years of service.
The official announcement, released by the Office of the Head of Service, Cross River State, aims directly at mitigating workforce shortages resulting from the mass retirement of nurses and other health professionals over the last few years.
Reacting to the development, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Nursing, Dr. Coco-Bassey Esu, stated that the approval comes at a critical juncture for the state's healthcare ecosystem. He emphasized that without this decisive intervention, several health centers and hospitals across Cross River State would have faced severe understaffing.
"This people-first decision by His Excellency will enable our experienced nurses and health workers to remain in service as mentors to guide younger professionals, fill existing workforce gaps, and ensure continuity in healthcare delivery and professional growth," Dr. Esu noted.
