WASHINGTON, D.C. - The US Department of State has unveiled a special, limited-edition commemorative passport to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence.
The announcement, made on 2 July, introduces a redesigned version of the traditional travel document, featuring bespoke custom artwork and enhanced historical imagery designed to honour the nation’s founding. Officials confirmed that despite the aesthetic overhaul, the passport retains all existing advanced security features, ensuring it remains the international gold standard for travel and identity verification.
The launch coincides with this weekend's historic Semiquincentennial celebrations on 4 July, marking two and a half centuries since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
State Department officials described the commemorative document as a tangible tribute to the country’s birthday, symbolising both the foundational ideals of liberty and the modern freedom of global exploration.
"This special passport invites Americans to carry forward that legacy," the Department of State said in a statement issued ahead of Independence Day. "It reflects both our shared history and our ongoing commitment to lead, innovate, and inspire for the next 250 years."
The public will not have to wait long to get their hands on the historic design. The State Department confirmed that the commemorative passport will be officially available for applications starting Monday, 6 July.
Citizens interested in renewing their current documents or applying for the new anniversary edition can find full details, eligibility criteria, and fee structures on the official government travel portal at travel.state.gov/passport250.
