FORMER GUINEAN PRIME MINISTER AND OPPOSITION LEADER SIDYA TOURÉ DIES AT 81

Sidya Touré

PARIS, France — Sidya Touré, a former prime minister of Guinea and one of the country's prominent opposition figures, has died in Paris at the age of 81.   Touré passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026, at the American Hospital of Paris, where he had been hospitalized for approximately two weeks after falling ill in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

He later entered Guinean public service, serving as Prime Minister of Guinea from July 1996 to March 1999 under President Lansana Conté. His tenure as prime minister was highlighted by key administrative and economic reforms, alongside initiatives to strengthen Guinea's ties with global financial institutions.   

Following his departure from office, Touré assumed leadership of the Union of Republican Forces (UFR) in 2000. Over the next two decades, he established himself as a prominent critic of successive Guinean administrations. He contested the Guinean presidency as the UFR candidate in both the 2010 and 2015 elections.   

Exile and Political Crackdown

Touré had been living in exile in Abidjan following the September 2021 military coup led by General Mamady Doumbouya. From exile, Touré continued to lead the UFR amidst increasing restrictions on political freedoms and dissenting voices in Guinea.   

In March 2026, the Guinean government dissolved 40 political parties, including the UFR. The dissolution occurred ahead of the December election in which Doumbouya was elected president—a vote conducted without the participation of the UFR or Guinea's two other primary opposition parties, the UFDG and RPG.   

TributesGuinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah offered condolences on social media, describing Touré as a key figure in the nation's political history.   "Sidya Touré was a prominent figure in Guinea's political life for three decades," Bah stated. "He distinguished himself above all as a pragmatic reformer. We bow before his memory."
