Gunmen attacked the divisional police headquarters in the Uratta area of Aba, Abia State, on Saturday night, killing two police officers and injuring three others before looting the facility. The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the attack, and Channels TV reported on Sunday that police have restored calm to the area following the assault.

The attackers struck the station with gunfire, killing two officers on duty and wounding three more, before making away with weapons and ammunition from the armoury, according to accounts carried by Punch and Channels TV. Police reinforcement was deployed to the area in the aftermath, and normalcy has since returned to the neighbourhood, though residents remain unsettled by the brazenness of the assault on a security facility in the heart of a major commercial city.

What happened during the Aba attack?

The assault on the Uratta divisional headquarters in Aba followed a pattern seen repeatedly in the Southeast, where armed groups have targeted police formations to seize arms and release detainees. The attackers arrived in numbers, overpowered the officers on duty, and left with the casualties before reinforcements arrived. The injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Abia State police spokesperson, confirmed the incident to journalists and said the command had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. Security operatives have since intensified patrols across Aba and its environs, and the police high command has ordered a review of security at police facilities in the state.

What is the security implication for the Southeast?

Attacks on police formations do two kinds of damage at once. They take weapons out of the state's armoury and into criminal hands, and they signal to residents that even secured facilities are not safe, which erodes confidence in reporting crime. Aba is the commercial engine of Abia State, home to thousands of small manufacturers and traders who depend on predictable security for night operations and logistics.

The state government and security agencies face a familiar dilemma: stations need manpower, but under-manned posts in high-risk zones become soft targets. The restored calm in Uratta is welcome, but the loss of two officers and the looted weapons mean the pursuit continues. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.

The incident adds to the security pressures the country is contending with across regions, from the Niger State mining tragedy, where 37 miners died and a suspended NSCDC commandant has apologised for what he called a costly mistake, to counter-terrorism operations in Kano and the Northwest. Each strain on the security services makes equipment recovery and officer protection a live national question.
