Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress and one of the loudest opposition voices ahead of the 2027 election, was injured on Friday at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, in an incident his camp calls a violent attack and the Ekiti State Police Command calls an altercation. What is agreed: he was treated at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, and social media claims that armed thugs had kidnapped him are false.

Was Sowore kidnapped in Ekiti?

No, according to the police. In a statement signed by the command's spokesperson, SP Abutu Sunday, the Ekiti command said messages circulating on social media alleging that the AAC candidate was "kidnapped by armed thugs, with his whereabouts unknown" were false. "The command wishes to categorically clarify that Mr Sowore was not kidnapped," the statement read, as quoted by Tribune Online and The Sun. Police said preliminary information indicated an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant around the Dalimore area of the state capital, after which officers were alerted, deployed to the scene, and "rescued" him. The police said he sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, while Commissioner of Police Falade Adegoroye Michael ordered a discreet investigation to identify everyone involved and ensure anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

What Sowore says happened

Sowore rejects the word altercation entirely. In posts on his X account, quoted by PM News Nigeria, he described his team as "brutally attacked and injured by armed government-sponsored thugs in Ado Ekiti" and alleged that operatives of the Department of State Services had provided the attackers with the team's exact location. He went further against the police account, calling it a trivialisation of what he called a coordinated, violent attack, and shared a video he said showed members of his team being treated for injuries. He also accused the command and the DSS of removing CCTV footage from the scene, an allegation reported by Naija News that, if taken up by investigators, becomes a central question of the case.

Why Sowore was in Ekiti

The visit was not a campaign stop. Sowore arrived in Ekiti State on Thursday ahead of Saturday's Ikogosi Marathon, as Tribune and QED.ng both report, which places him in Ado-Ekiti a day before the incident. The timing means his presence drew no attention until the late-Friday reports of a kidnap began to spread, and it also means the state's most prominent sporting weekend of the moment now carries a political-security shadow.

What the incident means for opposition politics

The disagreement over what happened, between "altercation" and "coordinated attack", is itself the story. Nigeria's campaign season for the January 2027 elections is already tense, and an attack on a sitting presidential candidate, by whatever description, raises the question every party's security team now has to answer: how are candidates protected outside the formal campaign calendar? Isaac Fayose, younger brother of the former Ekiti governor, called on Sowore to unite with Peter Obi and other opposition leaders while demanding that security agencies arrest those behind the attack.

The police's own framing may yet change. A "preliminary information" statement, issued hours after the incident, is not an investigative conclusion, and the discreet investigation the commissioner ordered will determine whether this ends as a brawl, an ambush, or something else entirely. Until it reports, both accounts stand as claims, not findings.
