Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed three suspected kidnappers and rescued a victim, Prince Michael Akao, 44, during a clearance operation in the Sasaro Forest area of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The rescue followed credible intelligence on the activities of a kidnap syndicate operating from the forest, which has been a haven for criminal gangs terrorising communities along the Edo-Kogi border.
According to a statement by the military, the troops came under fire from the criminals on arrival at the camp but responded decisively, neutralising three of the kidnappers while others fled with gunshot wounds.
The victim, who had been held in the camp for several days, was rescued unhurt and is currently receiving medical attention before being reunited with his family.
Items recovered from the camp include weapons, mobile telephones and other equipment believed to have been used in coordinating abductions and ransom negotiations.
The military said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to deny criminal elements freedom of action across the South-South and North-Central regions.
Residents of communities around Akoko-Edo have repeatedly raised alarm over activities of kidnappers in the forest, calling for a sustained military presence in the area.
Troops have been urged to sustain the offensive until all the camps in the general area are dismantled and those behind the abductions are brought to justice.
