Honeywell has launched Forge Plant Cognition, an industrial artificial intelligence platform built with NVIDIA AI and Dell Technologies infrastructure, and the first plant in the world to run it is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. Honeywell estimates that AI-enabled optimisation could be worth more than 29 US cents on every barrel processed at the site, which adds up to more than 60 million dollars in gross operational benefit a year at full capacity. What is Forge Plant Cognition and why did it launch in Nigeria first?Forge Plant Cognition is what Honeywell calls a physical AI platform for refining, petrochemical and liquefied natural gas operators: software that combines the company's century of process engineering know-how with NVIDIA accelerated computing and Dell Technologies' AI infrastructure. Its job is to help plants squeeze more value from assets they already own, rather than waiting for new hardware. Honeywell announced the platform on Monday, October 26, 2026, and named Dangote's Lekki refinery as its launch site, according to Honeywell's own press release, carried by Business Wire. The choice of first stop is deliberate. Lekki is the world's largest single-train refinery, currently running at 650,000 barrels per day, and the two companies have worked together for nearly a decade. Launching there gives Honeywell a flagship case study; it gives Nigeria's most valuable industrial asset a very early look at industrial AI in production. How much value could the AI platform create at the Lekki refinery?Based on preliminary data, Honeywell estimates AI-enabled optimisation could deliver an operational benefit of more than 29 US cents per barrel at Lekki. At full-capacity throughput, the company says that works out to more than 60 million dollars in gross benefit per year for this single facility. For scale, that estimate covers the refinery's current 650,000 barrels per day, before the planned expansion to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, which Tech Times and Hydrocarbon Engineering both report Honeywell is supporting. What will the platform actually do inside the plant? The refinery's operating data will be integrated with Honeywell's process expertise and AI-powered optimisation to identify operational constraints, accelerate troubleshooting and enable more informed decisions, according to Honeywell's announcement. David Bird, Chief Executive and Managing Director of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, said the refinery chose the platform because it combines industrial expertise with differentiated AI capabilities to help optimise performance, unlock greater value from operations and evolve how the assets are run. Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, framed the launch as proof that AI can drive new levels of productivity, reliability and profitability at significant scale. The underlying Forge Cognition technology is not experimental: Tech Times reports it already runs across more than 300,000 connected locations worldwide, and a pilot at NVIDIA's Voyager campus recorded roughly 90 percent fewer unnecessary alerts, according to Energy Digital. What does this mean for Nigerian industry? Two signals stand out. First, serious AI deployment in Nigeria is no longer only about chatbots and data centres: this is industrial AI going into the heart of the country's most valuable plant, targeting throughput and reliability rather than headlines. Second, the project is deliberately local in its people strategy. Honeywell says the deployment supports Dangote's goal of a workforce that is 70 percent Nigerian, reducing reliance on external expertise over time. It also fits the wider run of AI infrastructure news for Nigeria this month, from the planned one-billion-dollar INFRAGORA AI-ready data centres in Lagos and Delta State to the Gates-backed AI Scaling Hub showcased at Moonshot 2026. Frequently asked questionsHow much could AI save the Dangote refinery? Honeywell estimates more than 29 US cents per barrel in operational benefit, over 60 million dollars a year at full capacity. Who built Forge Plant Cognition? Honeywell built it with NVIDIA AI and accelerated computing capabilities plus Dell Technologies' AI infrastructure. Why did it launch at Dangote's refinery first? Lekki is the world's largest single-train refinery and a Honeywell partner of nearly ten years, making it the flagship first deployment. When will the refinery reach 1.4 million barrels per day? Honeywell is supporting an expansion from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day within three years of its November 2025 selection, with reporting pointing to 2028. |
