Ushie

A mother had just served breakfast to her son before setting out for her day's business. She also kept lunch for him, to be taken after noon. But no sooner did the woman leave than the young boy went and adjusted the arms of the clock to read noon, and went ahead to take his lunch. Everywhere else was just a little past 9.00 am!

At the time it appeared to be noon to that boy, the rest of the world was past 9.00 am, completely unaffected by the boy's wishes and actions.

Such is the illusion of many African youths in their little world and in their small circle of deluded friends, where they console themselves with suiting arguments that the Bible is a bunch of myths. Meanwhile, the Bible itself pities them, knowing that “their trouble is that they are only comparing themselves with each other and measuring themselves against their little ideas. What stupidity!” (2 Corinthians 10:12).

When you consider that these young Africans who challenge the Bible don’t see anything wrong with other religious books that are worse in content and potency, you will see reasons to pity them for toying with a precious opportunity, both now and forever. At the height of their pride, they ought to pause and ponder, ‘What if the Bible is true?’, considering the many surprises and disappointments that are often experienced. Best exams often turn out with poor grades; best friends often turn out as traitors, etc.

African youths in this habit should expect the worst trouble from the Bible's claim that God made us (Psalm 100:3). No product or possession dares to treat its owner that way. You throw off any of your pair of slippers that 'challenge' you (by refusing to perform). You cancel and rewrite any sentence that doesn't meet the test. As a mother you even approve abortion of any fetus that threatens your life. And dare you question the veracity and validity of God's infallible word in the Bible and not suffer damage! “Shall the thing made say to him who made it, 'He did not make me?' Or shall the thing formed say to him who formed it, 'He has no understanding?'" (Isaiah 29:16)

You should pause and weigh your overall importance in the scheme of things. Stop and ask how much of your opinion is consulted before anything is done, anywhere. How much do you weigh in your family, school, community or national affairs, to begin with? How many people seek your opinion before they do anything, just to prove how important or indispensable you are? In fact, how many people care that you exist in the first place?

Most likely none. It's doubtful if neighbours know you, much less depend on you for anything. And yet you think your opinion on the Bible matters as much as one-trillionth of a grain of sand! It is written, "What if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar" (Romans 3:3-4).

Young Africans who labour to discredit the Bible don't know how much they are indebted to it. Many would never have been born if Christianity hadn't saved their forefathers from such barbaric practices like the slave trade, cannibalism and ritual sacrifices that characterized pre-Christian Africa. Young Africans' knowledge of grammar was learned in Christian schools. Their being alive under heinous African regimes is because of faithful Bible believers who intercede on their behalf.

And you, in particular, know that more accomplished agnostics have risen and fallen, while the Bible marches on and even attends their funerals. Vladimir Ilitch Ulianov, the Russian revolutionary popularly known as Lenin, once said in his hay days, "Every religious idea, every idea of God, even flirting with the idea of God, is unutterable vileness of the most dangerous kind, contagion of the most abominable kind. Millions of sins, filthy deeds, acts of violence and physical contagion, are far less dangerous than the subtle, spiritual idea of God." Yet when he felt threatened by an anti-communist band led by General Kornilov, Lenin’s bodyguard heard him praying, "May God grant that we escape"!

You will come to Lenin’s experience, sooner or later. All agnostics have come there too, at one time or another.

The conclusion of the matter is this: Like that young boy created noon out of 9.00 am while the rest of the world moved on unaffected, your opinion on the Bible amounts to nothing beyond those with whom you share your depravity. You have one of two options to look at the issue: stay deceived in your cubicle and face the wrath of the Bible’s God, or receive the Bible’s message through faith in Jesus Christ the Lord and be saved. Either way, you will face God, sooner or later, and prove that it is a dreadful thing to do so (Hebrews 10:31; 2 Corinthians 5:10).

"Ant, therefore, will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment ... he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee" (Isaiah 30:18-19).
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611998063321480650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3295669721229366621.post-41065762198387323572024-03-12T08:33:00.000-07:002024-03-12T08:33:14.806-07:00Nigerian Army Troops Burst IPOB/ESN Majors Firearms/Drones Factory In Delta State, Arrest 6 Suspects

Troops of the Nigerian Army have made a significant inroad in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency, as they uncovered and neutralized a major firearms and drone manufacturing factory operated by Armed fighters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militia arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) at Onicha Ulona in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The intelligence led operation, revealed that the dissidents were using the factory to carryout criminal activities to terrorize neighbouring communities and innocent citizens. She said after she visited the bar to request some money to buy food, the man and the unknown woman descended on her with blows, beating her to a pulp. She claimed that they also poured the alcohol they were drinking on her.
The woman with a visibly swollen face said;
“I went to ask him for money to buy food, and he was seated with another woman drinking alcohol. They poured the alcohol on me and then began to beat me.”
Okumu, who confessed to having concealed such assault in the past to protect the husband, now wants her husband arrested to prevent a repeat of the same once she returns home.
Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611998063321480650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3295669721229366621.post-736882504950410392024-03-12T03:33:00.000-07:002024-03-12T03:33:31.681-07:00 The Other Side Of Your 'Coin' - Joseph L. A bigger part of the definition, however, is that every coin has two sides.

What does this mean? We are essentially human 'currencies' in circulation. For our currency to be accepted as a legal tender, we must have two sides. We must have our "bad" and "good" sides. The bad side teaches or gives us experience; the good side equips or empowers us to teach or give help to others. This also suggests that the 'badder' (worse) our experiences, the better positioned we are to render help to our benefactors when the time comes.

Ultimately, nothing is bad or good in life, if we picture the way God intends it for us. That's what Scripture means when it says that "all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose" (Romand 8:28). That places the bigger question, not at what has happened or is happening, but whether we love God or are aligned with his purpose for our existence at this critical moment in human history!

This is even more critical for us young Nigerians, who must fulfil Pa Elton's prophecy across the nations of the world. In 1986 Pa Sydney Elton, whose prophecy also birthed the NYSC, said, "Nigeria and Nigerians will be known for corruption worldwide. But afterwards, the tide will change and Nigeria and Nigerians will be known for righteousness worldwide. Many will lay hold of him that is a Nigerian and say, 'We will go with you, for we have heard that God is among you!'"

To qualify to fulfil that prophecy, young Nigerians must be taken to the bottom of it all, so that those who survive it will be able to give hope and direction to the nations wherever God will commission them. They will tell the people to whom they will be sent that they had been there - be it bad government, economy, church, etc. - and that God saw them through and would do the same for those nations if they would embrace the gospel from Nigeria.

The fact of a two-faced coin among God's people is as old as the Flood experience in Noah's generation (Genesis 7-8). At the same time that the flood drowned some people, it lifted Noah and everyone in his ark far above and beyond destruction. The problem, if any, wasn't the Flood, but the location that individual members chose to take. Those who stood against God perished, those who stood for his will survived. Even ferocious animals like mosquitoes, lions, wolves, etc. survived where great monarchs and luminaries of the time perished.

Once you can capture the coin analogy, you should no longer feel bad or ashamed when or if you lose an eye or a limb. That 'loss' simply means that you don't need two of them to be successful or fulfilled. For the same reason you will begin to relax if or when you lose a spouse, parent or sponsor. They are gone because you can succeed or even do better without them. It could be that God let them go because their presence and support rendered dormant some of your inert potentials, which would pass unutilised for as long as these props lived or spoonfed you.

Prophet Isaiah is a ready biblical example here. He was a palace chaplain to King Uzziah, but God's purpose for him was to summarise the entire Bible in a 66-chapter book (39 chapters for the Old Testament, and 27 chapters for the New or Messianic Testament). Yet, so long as the king lived, Isaiah felt fulfilled drinking tea morning after morning in the palace, but completely deaf and oblivious to God's call across the galaxies for a volunteer messenger (Isaiah 6:8). It took the king's death for Isaiah to flip to the other side of his life and become whom he was destined to be (vs. 1-7).

Like Isaiah, you need to see the other side of your life, through certain pains and disappointments, to realise that amidst your seeming contentment, you have hardly scratched anything you were fearfully and wonderfully born to accomplish (Psalm 139:14). That's possibly why you have recently been surrounded with such predicaments that mercilessly make life miserable and hopeless for you by the day.

Yes, you are probably one of those who are almost suffocating under the current economic hardship in the country, especially if every projection you ever made is being dashed. You just can't help feeling hopeless, miserable, frustrated, disappointed, angry, suicidal, discouraged, etc. Maybe all this is a call to you, that it's time to look away from your 'idols' that promised you success and begin to see the other side of your life that has been lying fallow all the while. Maybe it's time to ask some more relevant questions about your existence.

Whatever the matter, nothing is lost. Money isn't lost when it's not in your pocket, it simply moves into your neighbor's who, probably, is more proactive, objective, positive and relaxed in the present situation. All you need, perhaps, is to stop bemoaning your predicament and look out for what's there for you, probably from your most hopeless direction!

In other words, at the height of your fears and discouragement over any situation, there's a part of your strength or grace that still lies fallow or uncultivated: don't give up until you have first discovered and exploited it. So whether it's your admission into college, a building project, a plan for marriage or another baby, the time you started it was the best, ever. Just be sure you don't limit your thinking or expectations. Trust God and see yourself rising from this same 'flood' into financial, marital, academic and spiritual prominence. Be the 21st century 'Noah' to survive this socioeconomic 'deluge' and tell your story to succeeding generations. Amen.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611998063321480650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3295669721229366621.post-58248310077581983432024-03-12T03:02:00.000-07:002024-03-12T03:02:16.865-07:00Presidency Alleges Sub-Regional Conspiracies Against Nigeria's Stability Amid Abductions

The Presidency has fingered some sub-regional forces for the escalating incidents of kidnapping of students and other security glitches in Nigeria.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, alleged that some sub-regional forces were “actively conspiring” against the stability of the country during an interview on TVC news late Sunday.

He, however, assured that the Federal Government is “responding” to the conspiracy of these sub-regional forces.

Recall that last Thursday, bandits abducted no fewer than 287 pupils/students from a primary and secondary school at Kuriga, a community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Days later, bandits also abducted some Tsangaya students at Gidan Bakuso in Gada LGA of Sokoto State. Harris Jr., said money laundering and the financing of terrorism continue to adversely impact the socio-economic development, peace, and security of member states and beyond.

He said in the last decade, the ECOWAS community had experienced an increasing level of terrorism, radicalisation, and violent extremism at an alarming rate.

“The GIABA Community shares this global concern regarding the current situation in the Central Sahel area and North-Eastern Nigeria and will continue to provide the necessary support to mitigate the money laundering and terrorist risks identified in line with the ECOWAS Priority Agenda,” he said

According to him, GIABA’s typology reports revealed the rapid evolution in the sources, methods, and techniques of terrorist financing, taking advantage of loopholes in legislation (such as the incompleteness of the terrorist financing criminalization regime), and the opportunities offered by digital finance and the power of cybernetic tools.

He said: “Even though the banking sector in most of our countries have taken steps to implement the UN sanctions lists (UNSC Resolution 1267) in terms of targeted financial sanctions linked to TF, there is still a vast majority of the private sector (particularly the DNFBP sector, Electronic Money Issuers, microfinances, Money and Value Transfer Services, insurance companies etc) that are struggling to align themselves.

“As for national sanctions lists, they remain severely handicapped by lack of operationality of national designation mechanisms under UNSC Resolution 1373.

“GIABA’s approach to supporting countries in their fight against the financing of terrorism is to bring their prevention and enforcement systems in line with international standards, particularly those of the Financial Action Task Force, FATF.

“In practice, this means providing countries with appropriate legal and institutional frameworks and building their capacity to implement these frameworks effectively. Most recently, in November 2023, GIABA organized a regional stakeholders’ workshop for operational agencies to engage them on the outcomes of our various typology reports for future adaptations and their responses to emerging threats.

“Counterterrorism can no longer be the exclusive domain of the military services. GIABA and FATF’s studies have rightly revealed that terrorists are increasingly using legitimate commercial enterprises to raise funds, as well as non-profit organizations, the abusive exploitation of extractive and mining resources, donations, crowdfunding, and above all, the proceeds of criminal activities such as kidnapping for ransom, extortion, illicit drug trafficking, illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, trafficking in arts and antics, etc. Terrorists also manage to move these collected funds through front companies, money or value couriers, using payment methods such as prepaid cards, mobile banking, or virtual assets.”

Terrorist financing networks must be disrupted – DSS

Also speaking, Director General, Department of State Services, DSS, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, who was represented by the Director of Training and Staff Development, Mrs Bolatito Sure-Olufe, said while military and intelligence efforts had achieved notable successes in disrupting terrorist operations, terrorist financing networks must be disrupted.

According to the D-G, depriving these groups of the funds that fuel their activities is crucial to undermining their capabilities and ultimately defeating them.

“Terrorist organizations rely heavily on a steady flow of funds to sustain their operations, including recruitment, training, procurement of weapons and explosives, and execution of attacks.

“By targeting their financial lifelines, we can strike at the very heart of these groups, limiting their reach and hampering their ability to carry out acts of violence.

“Moreover, the financial trail left by terrorist financing activities provides invaluable intelligence that can help uncover the structure, connections, and intentions of these networks, enabling more targeted and effective interventions.

“By strengthening our ability to follow the money trail, we can deprive these groups of the resources they need to carry out their heinous acts, ultimately contributing to a more secure and peaceful world for all.”

Why we need urgent actions – Nuhu

On his part, Nigeria’s Ambassador to ECOWAS, Amb. MS Nuhu, noted that the challenges posed by terrorism in the Sahel region, as well as the movement of terrorist groups towards coastal areas, underscore the urgency of actions.

He said in light of these challenges, ECOWAS in 2018, initiated the development of a regional framework for counter-terrorism.

“It is crucial to highlight that component six of the ECOWAS Regional Action Plan is dedicated to countering the financing of terrorism within the region.

‘’This underscores the critical importance of addressing the issue of terrorist financing, which serves as a significant enabler for terrorist activities.

Need for national, regional collaboration

Director/CEO of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, who is also the National Correspondent of GIABA, Hafsat Bakari, said blocking the channels, routes and techniques used to move these funds within ECOWAS nations and across their borders required cooperation not just at a national level but also at a regional level.

According to her, this can only be achieved through a proper understanding and application of the role of the military, intelligence services, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and the judiciary in this collective endeavour.

She said one of the strategic objectives of the National Counter-Terrorism Financing Strategy is enhancing the capabilities of Nigeria’s front-line military, intelligence, law enforcement, and prosecutorial authorities.

I hid in a shrub like a snake to escape from abductors – Kuriga student

Abubakar was among nearly 280 school children kidnapped at Kuriga but he and 27 others were able to return to their respective families.

The kidnapped children, both male and female, were between the ages of five and 18.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa monitored in Kaduna, yesterday, Mustapha Abubakar explained that the bandits moved the children like a herd of cows.

He said: “We trekked in the bush, sometimes we crawled.
