In a quest to promote media professionalism, The Arthur Jarvis University (AJU) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Association of Cross River Online Journalists (ACROJ) to kick start the Institute of Online Journalism (IOJ) in Calabar, CRS.
The University situated in Akpabuyo CRS is the first private university in Cross River State, was established in march 2017 and has recorded tremendous progress in a space of 4 years.
The V.C Prof Ani Nkang, in his speech shared his excitement working with ACROJ.
"We are quite happy with the MoU that we have signed with the Association of Cross River Online Journalist because this was kick started to play the platform where our students especially in the area of Mass Communication and also interested members of the public can come in and do certification programs outside the usual degree program. It will help professional certification of out Mass Communication students, other interested students, online campus journalist. In almost very University you find students into online journalism, so they will also benefit from the certification program this MoU will get us to." He said.
Meanwhile, he also revealed his expectation from the school in the next five years.
"In the next five years, this institution will be a University of Choice, and I project the students population range in the next five years should approach 5000 (five thousand) and a lot of existing programs should have been firmly established and obviously in the next 3 to 4 years, there will be new faculties created outside the existing five. The institution is growing and we wish this MoU will help in projecting the University as an Institution of choice." He added.
Also speaking with the chairman ACROJ, Mr Edem Darlington posited that the choice of AJU among other University due to its high standard and conducive learning environment while enumerating the packages the system has put in place for interested students across the globe.
"This is crucial at this moment not just because AJU is the first private University in Cross River State, but also they have the capacity. Our choice was very direct and careful. The desire to go into this partnership is as a result of the desire to increase professionalism. We hope to ensure that those practicing gain some level of training. We also want to do away with the situation where people who practice journalism are not all equipped. And also censor entrance into the field. It is basically about training and our desire to continue to train and expose young people to the knowledge and experience of the field." He said.
"We developed an app which will help anyone study from anywhere, from admission process to examination. Everything is just a click away." He added
Some members of the management also expressed their feelings on the recent development.
The event also had the presence of the Registrar, Mrs Ughas Ngozi Fellicia, Head of strategy compliance, Mrs Frank Edima, Dean Faculty of humanities, management and social science, Mr. Willie Ebri, representative of the consultancy unit, Mrs Knowledge Abraham and members of ACROJ.
