Innovation: NGO Awards Scholarship To 15 Year Old Asuquo Ayi




A student of  Community Secondary School, Akpap Okoyong, Asuquo Okon Ayi has bagged a scholarship up to the university level by the Association of Concerned Indigens of Okoyong, ACION for what the association described as his 'innovative exploits' 


The 15 year old JSS 3 student was spotted after he designed and constructed a prototype of a 6 bedroom apartment with used materials like used plastics, cartons, batteries etc. 


President of the group, Pastor Effiong Ekpo eulogized the young boy whom he described as a 'genius'. He said the association will bear the responsibility of nurturing and mentoring the boy with the aim of making sure he excels in his academic performance. He maintained that the association will also be on the look out for other young innovative minds of Okoyong extraction and Cross River State in general. 


According to Ekpo "the desire of this group is to bring back the culture of encouraging hardwork and innovative ideas, which is the bedrock of any progressive society". 

 

Also speaking, sponsor of the schoolarship and member of ACION, Mr. Kingsley Efiom Ayi said he was moved by the innovative effort of master Asuquo Okon when the group visited displaced people of Ubambat in Akpap Okoyong, whose community was Invaded by youths of Ikot Offiong to provide relieve materials. 


"Whe we went to assist our brothers and sister who lost so much by thedesigns invasion of Ikot Offiong Youths, I noticed the array of innovative  this young boy had made and I felt he should be supported and encouraged by way of schoolarship. And this schoolarship will run from now until he graduates from the university"


Reacting, master Asuquo Okon said he was excited at the opportunity as it will take alot of burden from his parents and help him remain focus in his studies. 


He said although he had designed several of such houses nobody ever took noticed of him until the association visited his community. 


ACION, a not for profit organization made up majorly of Okoyong Indigens has been in the forefront of humanitarian activities within Okoyong nation. It would be recall that in the wake of the unprovoked attack against residents of Ubambat community by some youths of Ikot Offiong community. The association galvanized humanitarian assistance for the displaced people of Ubambat, thereby bringing succour to many homes.
