APC Convention: Group Sacks Mary Ekpere, Calls For Her Arrest

Mary Ekpere

As the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Woman Leader gathers momentum, Eastern-based groups under the aegis of South-East Girls Development Union (SEGDU) have come out strongly against the aspiration of Mary Ekpere for the position of the National Woman Leader, saying it would be unfair for Ekpere to hold the position after performing badly as the immediate past Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

The group tackled those rooting that the party’s Woman Leader Position is handed over to Mary Ekpere saying the party has better candidates in its midst for the plum job. The secretary of the group, Mrs. Ngozi Elekwa who stated this in a statement she made available to newsmen, said pushing for Mary to become APC’s Woman leader would automatically mean the party has failed.

According to Ngozi, Dr. Betta Edu is a more qualified and credible candidate who would impact the lives of women across boards, judging from her tremendous achievements and empowerment programs across the country.

“I don’t think those pushing for Mary Ekpere under our great party wishes the APC well. Mary Ekpere should step down and even be arrested for not judiciously using funds given to her to run the agency she headed".

“Betta is a team player that has demonstrated good leadership during her assignment as the commissioner for health, noting that she has all it takes to lead the country better than any other aspirant.

“Betta has good knowledge of how to lead the country having worked closely with the party members at the National level. She has also made a lot of sacrifices and made significant contributions to make the APC gain acceptance in Cross River State since she joined the party".

“We cannot be talking about Mary Ekpere when we have Betta in our midst. What did Ekpere do as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development? How many people can say that they benefitted anything from her while was in that position? If she could not do well then, is it now that she will do well?"

“It is against this background that we are advising all the party stakeholders, especially its leaders to cede the position to Dr. Betta Edu”. the group said.
