Several Nigerian Army personnel are feared dead as a Hilux Van conveying officers and personnel was involved in a ghastly accident along the Murtala Mohammed Highway, Calabar.

The accident happened this afternoon at the Bebobsco bend of the highway.

It is suspected that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle under the heavy rains in the city capital because of overspeeding.

According to newsmen who visited the scene of the incident while it was still raining, men of the Nigerian army were seen making efforts to pull those trapped out of their badly damaged vehicle.

Members of the public were prevented from taking pictures by stern-looking officers who paraded the scene of the event.

Meanwhile, close to the Army vehicle was seen an ash colour Sienna which was damaged beyond recognition. The Sienna was suspected to have collided with the Army vehicle.

A gridlock is currently experienced along the highway because of the incident.

A truckload of the Nigerian Army was also spotted close to Ekpo Iso axis of the Highway, and personnel were seen directing traffic under the heavy rain.

At the time of filing this report, calls put to the Nigeria Army Public Relations Officer in Cross River state, Captain Aluko for comments on the incident was not answered.
