FREE TRADE ZONE: Sen. Gershom Bassey And His Team Passes Bill To Empower Customs To Drive Economic Growth

The Senate passed a bill to repeal and re-enact the customs and Excise Management Act 2004.


The passage of the bill followed the consideration of a report by the committee on customs, Excise and Tarriffs. One of the committee members and Frontline gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Gershom Bassey said the bill among others, seeks to assist the Nigeria Customs Service administration in driving economic growth and trade facilitation gear towards nation building and stability of economy.


According to the lawmaker, the bill when signed into law would make the NCS a legal entity under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning with a Board to serve Nigerians and International trade. The bill which has 286 cluases, also seeks to bring the Customs and Excise Management Act in line with modern-day Customs operations and global standard within the confine of the law at the corridor of productivity and economy enhancement with single legal reference document instead of multiple enactments.

 

However, after rigorous scrutiny and ratification of the bill by the committee, motion and consideration was made for the subject matter to be passed into law at the Red Chambers.

It is obvious that, the Frontline gubernatorial aspirant, Sen. Gershom who is endowed with administrative acumen can as well contribute and reshape the paradise city of Cross River State into an El Dorado in line with Cross River State blueprint in his custody.
