Government Warns Protesters: Stay Away from Prisons

Haliru Nababa

The Federal Government has announced that all 256 prisons across the country are "red zones" ahead of the planned nationwide anti-government protests on August 1. The Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, stated through the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, that people who have no business at these facilities should stay away.

Nababa warned that custodial centres are critical to public safety and national security. Any attempt to interfere with or attack these facilities could lead to chaos and threaten overall security. He urged the public to help protect these facilities and mentioned that extra security measures have been implemented, including the activation of the Ministry of Interior Joint Task Force.

He also expressed gratitude to the public for their continued cooperation in maintaining peace and order around these facilities. Nababa encouraged people to report any suspicious activity to the NCoS.

This warning comes in light of past incidents, such as the 2020 #EndSARS protests, which led to jailbreaks at several facilities. During those protests, over 2,000 inmates escaped from various prisons, including major breakouts at Oko and Benin custodial centres in Edo State and the Okitipupa custodial centre in Ondo State.
