The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 with a false promise of securing employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
The suspect was apprehended by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South Local Government Area following a complaint lodged by Mrs Edemawan Samuel, who alleged that Ekpeme presented himself as a medical doctor and convinced her to part with the money after assuring her he could facilitate jobs for her children at the teaching hospital.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly used the false representation to deceive the complainant into releasing the money.
He added that detectives recovered exhibits believed to be connected with the alleged offences, while the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Eitokpah said the Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua, has directed investigators to carry out a thorough and discreet investigation to determine the full extent of the suspect's activities and establish whether other victims or accomplices may be linked to the case.
He noted that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations if sufficient evidence is established. The police also assured members of the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
