The Ogun State Chapter of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) criticized the government for allegedly sponsoring counter-protests against citizens exercising their constitutional right to protest. The NRM urged the Federal Government to listen to the grievances of Nigerians instead of undermining the protest.
In a statement on Friday, Olujobi Fayoyin, the acting state Chairman of the NRM, expressed disappointment at the current government officials. He pointed out the irony of officials who once protested while out of power now trying to suppress public dissent. Fayoyin described this as a betrayal of the citizens' trust.
He said, “It's irresponsible and cruel for the government to back a protest against those exercising their right as Nigerians to protest. This shows the government’s unwillingness to listen to the people, and any negative outcomes from this protest will be due to the government's actions against the protesters. Those in power now, who once protested against the system, should not be trying to stop others from doing the same. Anyone in government who acts this way doesn't care about the masses and should not be re-elected if they seek office again.”
The NRM emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles by listening to the people and engaging in meaningful dialogue rather than using force. Fayoyin urged government officials to genuinely serve the public and restore faith in Nigeria’s political system.
“Anyone who wants to serve in government must be willing to listen to the people and act according to their will, as democracy is government by the people, for the people. We must practice what we preach, or else people will lose all faith in politicians, which may be irreparable,” Fayoyin emphasized.
He called on all politicians to work together to build the country rather than undermine the trust of Nigerians. He also urged the President and state governors to communicate with the public in a way that fosters understanding, rather than showing force against the people.
On Thursday, Nigerians across the country protested, particularly over the rising cost of living. Before this protest, some groups, allegedly sponsored by the government, acted as anti-protesters to prevent the planned demonstrations. During the August 1st protest, some protesters were reportedly attacked by these anti-protesters.
