FG Increases Corps Members’ Monthly Allowance to N77,000

The Federal Government has raised the monthly allowance of corps members to N77,000, effective from July 2024.

This increase was announced in a statement by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The decision was conveyed through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, signed by the Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, and dated September 25, 2024. The move is in line with the recently enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Prior to this adjustment, corps members were receiving a monthly allowance of N33,000, following a review of the minimum wage to N30,000 in 2019. The new law, signed by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024, sets the minimum wage at N70,000.

The increase in corps members’ pay had been a topic of speculation since the new minimum wage law was passed. NYSC officials had stated that any adjustment in corps members’ allowances would depend on the Federal Government’s decision.

In the statement, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, expressed gratitude to the government for the approval. He noted that the higher allowance would provide much-needed support to corps members and encourage them to serve the nation with greater dedication.

“The Federal Government has approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000 with effect from July 2024. This is in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024,” the statement read.

The NYSC boss thanked the government for the gesture and is hopeful that the increment will not only bring relief to corps members but also motivate them to perform better in their service to the nation.
