Over 150 passengers are missing after a boat capsized in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State on Tuesday.
The boat, carrying over 300 people—mainly women and children—was traveling from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community for the Maulid celebration when the accident happened.
According to the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Absullahi Baba-Arah, rescue efforts are currently underway to find more survivors.
Baba-Arah said, “NSEMA received a report of a boat accident that took place on the night of October 1, 2024, around 8:30 pm along River Niger, near Gbajibo Community in Mokwa LGA. The boat, transporting about 300 passengers, was heading to Gbajibo for the Maulid celebration.”
He added that NSEMA is working with the State Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers on the rescue mission.
“So far, thanks to the quick response of local volunteers, over 150 people have been rescued alive,” he stated.
He assured the public that search and rescue operations will continue, and more updates will be shared as new information becomes available.
