Tajudeen Abbas |
Members of the House of Representatives have called for the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, to be awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), rejecting the current honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) given to him by President Bola Tinubu.
During a plenary session on Wednesday, lawmakers from different political parties described the award as unfair, especially since the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, received the GCON honour. They argued that the Speaker of the House, who is 4th in protocol ranking, should not receive a lower honour than the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who is 5th in ranking but was also given the GCON.
Deputy Spokesman of the House, Philip Agbese, raised a motion expressing dissatisfaction over what he called the diminishing treatment of the House of Representatives compared to the Senate.
He emphasized that the demand was not for Abbas personally but for the respect of the Office of the Speaker. Other lawmakers supported the motion, stressing that the office deserves the same recognition as its counterpart in the Senate.
Further details are expected to emerge as the issue unfolds.
