The Cross River State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding a serious motor accident that occurred on April 24, 2025, in Ogoja Local Government Area, while also addressing a viral video containing false allegations against its personnel.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene, said the incident involved a lone accident along the Abakpa/Igoli Road at about 10:45 a.m. The accident involved a BMW vehicle with registration number AKD 900 GD, driven by one Bassey Precious, accompanied by Caleb Fidelis Okem.
According to preliminary investigations, the accident happened when the driver tried to evade arrest by armed men suspected to be operating in a white Toyota Hiace bus. The identity of the armed men has not yet been confirmed.
"Preliminary findings revealed that the accident was a result of an attempt to resist arrest by unknown armed men, not officers of the Nigeria Police Force as being falsely alleged," the police stated.
Following the accident, a resident identified as Joseph Otonko, 21, of No. 36 Old Court Road, Abakpa, Ogoja, posted a video on TikTok accusing police officers from Ogoja Division of misconduct and involvement in the crash.
The Command described the video as "false, misleading, and inciteful," warning that such content could undermine public trust in security agencies.
Upon being invited for questioning, Otonko admitted that his claims were baseless. He later issued a public disclaimer video retracting his earlier accusations and clearing the police of any involvement.
In reaction to the developments, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olusegun Eyitayo Omosanyin, PSC(+), fdc, warned against the spread of false information.
"The Command appreciates the public for their continuous cooperation but urges all citizens to be law-abiding and responsible in their expressions," CP Omosanyin said. "Spreading falsehoods against security agencies is unlawful and harmful to the peace and progress of our society."
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Force to professionalism, transparency, and quality service delivery. He also encouraged citizens to seek proper verification through official channels before making public statements.
"The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to serving the people with integrity. We urge the public to always verify facts and not engage in actions that could endanger the collective peace of our communities," the statement concluded.
The Cross River State Police Command called on residents to support ongoing efforts to maintain safety and security across the state.
