In a strongly worded communiqué released following their meeting in The Hague on 25 June, the Foreign Ministers of the G7 nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—alongside the High Representative of the European Union, have jointly called for restraint and renewed diplomacy in the Middle East amid heightened tensions.

The ministers reaffirmed their endorsement of the recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, urging all sides to avoid provocations that could further destabilise the region.

Acknowledging the mediation efforts of Qatar, the G7 officials expressed gratitude for its role in facilitating the ceasefire. They also extended solidarity to both Qatar and Iraq, following strikes attributed to Iranian forces and affiliated groups on their territories. The ministers emphasised support for all regional efforts geared towards de-escalation and long-term stability.

On the matter of nuclear proliferation, the joint statement underscored a firm stance: “The Islamic Republic of Iran can never be permitted to possess nuclear weapons.” The group urged Tehran to avoid resuming enrichment activities deemed unjustified and called for a return to comprehensive, verifiable, and durable negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear programme.

The G7 further pressed Iran to comply fully with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), stressing the importance of close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The statement condemned recent calls within Iran for the arrest and execution of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, describing them as unacceptable.

“The NPT remains the cornerstone of the global non-proliferation regime,” the ministers asserted, calling on Iran to ensure transparency by providing IAEA inspectors with unimpeded access to nuclear sites and material.

Reaffirming their enduring commitment to regional peace, the G7 members restated their support for Israel's right to self-defence and its security amidst ongoing threats.

The joint message concluded with a unified appeal for diplomacy, dialogue, and adherence to international obligations, positioning multilateral cooperation as the essential path to sustained stability in the Middle East.
