The Rufai family has announced the passing of Prince Peter “Dodo Mayana” Rufai, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, who died early on Thursday, 3 July 2025, at the age of 61 after a brief illness.
In a statement released by the family, they described his death as “an irreplaceable loss” and paid tribute to his life of excellence on and off the pitch. “With total submission to the will of Almighty God, we announce the transition to glory of our father and brother,” the statement read.
Rufai’s football journey began in the late 1970s with Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt, and he rose to become Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goalkeeper, representing the Super Eagles in USA ’94 and France ’98. He featured in four Africa Cup of Nations finals and was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph at Tunisia ’94. Over his international career, Rufai earned 66 caps and even scored once.
His club career spanned five countries—including Benin, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain—where he garnered admiration for his shot-stopping and leadership. After hanging up his gloves, Rufai returned to Nigeria to establish Staruf Sports Development Limited, dedicating himself to youth development and grassroots sport.
Since the news broke, tributes have poured in from across Nigeria and the global football community. “We thank everyone for your love and sympathy,” the family said, adding that details of burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
